How Proper Parking Lot Lighting Is Smart Risk Management

roper Parking Lot and Outdoor Area LightingIf your facility is more than 10 years old, more than likely your outdoor security lighting is not up to snuff. We recommend that you conduct a full evaluation of the exterior lighting, as the inadequacy of exterior lighting has been at the core of many lawsuits alleging that a facility owner was negligent.

The proper level of security in parking lots and other outdoor areas hinge greatly on the lighting and how effective it is. Outdoor lighting system design is a science that can be difficult for an overall facility or security manager to grasp. The options and regulations make using a lighting expert a wise choice.

However, anyone managing a commercial outdoor area or parking facility should familiarize themselves with a few fundamentals. There are some basic considerations when assessing your lighting system, such as its intensity, uniformity, color, efficiency and life span.

Lighting a commercial parking lot effectively is becoming more sophisticated and often requires a contractor to adhere to mandated parameters of a particular environment. Regulatory codes mandate certain number of foot-candles and a minimum amount of glare, while also restricting the luminance to parking areas only. By controlling the direction of the lamps, it can prevent light from spilling into neighborhood streets, homes and businesses. More and more municipalities are passing stricter dark sky laws to prevent light pollution in parking lots and commercial centers.

LED Solar Lighting Versus Tradition Incandescent Lighting:

Very few businesses or real estate development companies consider using solar panels to run their outdoor lights, but in places without established cabling, solar lights really can make sense from an economic and efficiency standpoint.

A new generation of LED solar powered systems for parking lot and street lighting offer automatic on/off functioning controlled by integral light sensor, cool white light that retain luminosity and over 10 years of LED lamp life.

Other considerations  for deciding what is more cost-effective are the zero power supply cost of LED solar lights, lower installation costs due to no need of digging trenches for cables.  LED offers up to eight times more brightness than incandescent lamps at a substantial reduction in CO2 emissions.

The best advice we can give is to research all your alternatives before deciding on your parking lot and outdoor lighting options, carefully weighing the advantages of solar versus traditional lighting solution, taking into account longevity, maintenance requirements and ROI.

  1. I’ve never thought much about parking lot lighting. I don’t think I’ve ever been in a real parking lot without lighting now that I think about it. I think it’s good that there are more dark sky laws being passed. I think if you’ve ever seen the full night sky, you’d understand why. I think for safety reasons though, it’s worth having all of that light in a parking lot. Thanks for the info!
